20 Years Behind the Grooming Table
The Motley Mutt started because Bristol needed a groomer who would slow down and do the job right. What started 20 years ago as a gooming service at a local vet is now a full salon and boutique on Volunteer Parkway, but the approach hasn't changed.
Every groom starts with an assessment. Coat condition, skin, temperament, the works. Nervous dogs get extra time. Seniors get gentle handling. Cats get their own calm space away from the dogs. No assembly-line grooming, no shortcuts.
The boutique side grew naturally. After years of clients asking "what shampoo do you use?" and "where do you get those treats?", it made sense to stock the products we actually stand behind. If it's on the shelf, someone asked for it.
A Note About Nervous Pets
If your pet is anxious, reactive, or has never been groomed before, tell us. We'll take the time to make it a good experience, even if that means splitting the groom into two visits. No pet leaves here stressed if we can help it.

Do you groom cats?
Yes. We groom both dogs and cats. Our cat grooming services include baths, lion cuts, nail trims, and de-matting. Cats are groomed in their own calm space, separate from the dogs.
How much does grooming cost?

Do I need an appointment?
Yes, grooming appointments are required. Nail trims are sometimes available as walk-ins. The boutique is open during regular hours with no appointment needed.
What if my dog is nervous or aggressive?
Tell us when you book. We have over 20 years of experience with anxious and reactive pets. We'll take extra time, and if needed, we'll split the groom into two visits so your pet stays comfortable.
What areas do you serve?
We're located on Volunteer Parkway in Bristol, TN. Most of our clients come from Bristol (TN and VA), Blountville, Kingsport, Johnson City, and Abingdon, VA. If you're in the Tri-Cities area, we're an easy drive.
How often should I get my dog groomed?
Most dogs do well with a full groom every 4 to 6 weeks. Breeds with longer or thicker coats may need more frequent visits. We'll recommend a schedule based on your dog's coat when you come in.
